Small Leather Goods or SLGs…they are just so darn cute!

SLGs! Every luxury brand has them! And they are so cute, am I right? It’s sometimes hard to resist their charm. Do you resist? Do you cave and buy all of them? 🤗

But, how many do you really need?

Do you have just the basics? Do you have a small collection? Maybe you think they are a total waste of money. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, uses and are offered by all of our favorite luxury houses. And with a price point much less than that of a luxury handbag, SLGs are so tempting.

Whether it is a wallet, key holder, coin purse, card holder, pouches of all varieties, phone case, agenda cover, passport holder, sunglass case and the list goes on. There are so many options, so many styles and so many materials. And, it seems to be, for the most part, easier to buy one of these little cuties than that Unicorn handbag that you can’t stop thinking about.

How many you say? That certainly is subjective and personal preference. At the end of the day, there is no magic number except yours. My magic number is 4, anything else is just extra.

What are your ride or die SLGs?

Is a wallet the first thing that you put in your handbag? Or is it a more minimalist card holder? Do you prefer a full size wallet or a compact wallet? Is it in canvas so that it is more durable and carefree? Is it in leather? (empriente, epi, lambskin, calfskin, caviar, epsom, everclear, etc.) Either way a wallet is the most basic and necessary of our ride or die SLGs.

Next? A key holder or key pouch. Keys are a funny thing for me. They smell funny! I don’t like keys loose on key chains inside my handbag. I like them contained in a key holder to contain the smell and the potential scratches. I do wish that key fobs were not so fat or that key holders were thicker to accommodate key fobs. Louis Vuitton, if you’re reading this, can you help us out? 😄

Everyone has to have a catch all pouch or cosmetic case. You know, that little pouch that holds the dental floss, the ink pen, gum, mints, lip gloss, mirror, tissues, nail clippers, eye drops, Tylenol, etc. etc. The thought of just throwing these items into my bag to have free roam, ummmm, hell no!

Sunglass case, nice! Coin purse, I couldn’t tell you the last time I actually carried coins with me. Small agenda/planner, heck yeah, you’re my kind of person!

Let’s talk wallets!

Full size wallets. Compact wallets. Micro wallets. Card holders. I think each are useful for different reasons and different handbags. Obviously you aren’t going to choose a full size wallet for your LV Palm Springs Mini Backpack or your Chanel Mini Rectangle. You likely are going to reach for a simple card holder or compact wallet for everyday use or vacation. Likely there is one style that you prefer no matter the handbag that you carry or the occasion.

Since mini bags are still the trend and preference, full size wallets aren’t in high demand. Plus, some people are card only, no cash, no checks (HAHA, there’s an SLG that has fallen off the radar.) thus no need for a full size wallet regardless of the handbag carried. If you do still like to carry cash then a compact wallet is a great choice. I personally like to have options and still have one full size wallet, a compact wallet and multiple card holders in my collection.

And lets not forget about the WOC – Wallet On Chain. I haven’t found one that works for me yet but I do think that they are great options if they work for what you need to carry with you.

These little accessories are quite useful!

  • All of the various holders, pouches and cases keep our items contained instead of everything just running around loose inside of our luxury handbags.
  • SLGs keep everything organized inside our handbags, a place for everything and everything in it’s place.
  • It’s easy to reach inside your bag and get an SLG just based on it’s shape without even looking or being able to see inside that deep, black hole.
  • Caring for your handbag is made easier when your items are contained in SLGs. No one wants that dreaded ink mark on the inside of their Classic Flap!
  • SLGs definitely make switching between handbags much easier.

To match or not to match…that is the question.

Are you team matchy matchy or are you team old faithfuls? I personally have my tried and true old faithfuls. My handbag will always have inside the LV Recto Verso card holder, the LV 6 ring key holder, the LV key pouch and either the LV mini pochette or the LV toiletry 19. Since my LV SLGs are all in monogram, then yes, I will match any of my LV monogram bags.

But, I don’t worry about matching my SLGs to the bag I’m carrying. I also don’t match brands necessarily. I will carry my LV SLGs in my Chanel bags. I will carry my Chanel SLGs in my Hermes bags. But I can certainly appreciate if you like to match brands to brands or material to material. That is certainly why there are sooooooo many choices!

How often do you switch your SLGs?

Ahhhhh, now here is the question that I’m going to be really honest about! Changing out SLGs, let’s be real, is a pain in the butt! I don’t switch between SLGs very often just because it’s a chore that I don’t enjoy. I will do it a few times a year just so I do use the SLGs in my collection.

When switching out my SLGs, it does make me really appreciate which ones I enjoy using and work for my lifestyle and which ones don’t. Switching out SLGs also now makes me stop and think long and hard about future SLG purchases. I now know that I don’t enjoy the switch and I know which SLGs work for me. Look honey, I can actually save some money!

I’ve also noticed that when I switch out between my handbag brands, I’m more likely to switch out my SLGs and stick with a brand for an extended time. I know, call me weird but my fellow handbag lovers will get it. 😉

Those cute little SLGs…Small Leather Goods!

When it comes down to it, only you can decide what works for you and your lifestyle. You may enjoy having a plethora of choices. You may enjoy the switch. You may enjoy having a small collection of these small cuties. Or you may only have those necessities and stick with the tried and true workhorses.

There really is no right or wrong answer here. But, I do think that we can all agree that they are so darn cute!
